The Banner Blues

Hello, fellow bloggers. 'Tis I, the Village Idiot. I come to you seeking help. Now before your eyes start glazing over and you hit that back button, take a moment and listen to me, please. Shouldn't all of us, as good citizens of Blogland, strive to help each other whenever possible? Isn't it almost incumbent upon each and every one of us to share blogging tips and techniques when asked? Eh? Isn't it? Wouldn't you want to enlighten the ignorant if given the chance? Of course you would. And here I am. The ignorant. Now's your big chance. Enlighten me. Would someone out there please tell me how to make a banner for my blog? Hello? Anyone there? Hello? It suddenly got very quiet. HelLOOOOOOOOO! My good friend Joan over at Joan's Journeys taught me how to insert a link without showing the whole URL or whatever it's called. See? I'm teachable. Now please. Someone teach me something new. Like this banner thing. I see all these cool banners out there and I so wish I had one. Don't get me wrong - I don't just want it for me. Noooo. I want it for you, too. You few, you brave, you crazy ones - who keep coming back and reading my blog. I want you guys to have something lovely to gaze upon. See? I'm so, so selfless. Really. If even just one of you could help a sista out here and tell me how to do this, I'd be ever so grateful. And if more than one of you would help me out, well...actually, that'd probably be better since I am somewhat technologically challenged, as they say, and may need to hear the same thing said several different ways before it actually sinks in. So what do you say? Willing to reach out and help a fellow blogger? Anyone? Anyone at all? Oh come on, people! I'm begging you here. Help me! Please! Eliminate ignorance wherever you can! Help me. Hellllllp meeeeeee! Or not. The choice is yours. Let your conscience be your guide. I'll be fine without a banner. I've gotten by all this time without one. I can soldier on, bannerless and alone. It's fine. Don't worry, if it's just too much trouble. I'll still smile upon your banners with all the sweetness my poor shrunken soul can muster. (hmmmm. Too much? Yeah, I thought so. I'll stop. I've pleaded and begged. Now we'll just see what comes of it).

  1. Haha! I haven't even figured out how to do quick links yet!!! As for banners, I'll hopefully be learning this off your blog now Kari!! (Isn't it shocking to think I actually teach I.C.T. at school...maybe 'teach' isn't the right word here..attempt to teach is more like it)

  2. I also am SO impressed with all the cool banners out there. Mine is just a favorite photo from the beach 2 years ago. I really need to change it out, since I'm sure people are getting tired of looking at it.

Wanted to pop on and say thanks for the birthday "Roll Tide"! :-)

  3. OK - I'll try to make this simple - here is how I did mine (and it looks pretty darned cool if I do say so myself).

    1. You need a picture. I had to crop mine down and make it kind of a rectangle shaped picture in order to work - square just wasn't doin' it for me.

    2. Go into your layout and click on the Edit button on your header.

    3. Fill out the information and add the image you want. You could get a bit fancier and add the writing onto your image by using another program but that, my dear, is another lesson. In this lesson, you are just going to add the image.

    4. Click on Behind title and description for placement if you want the Blog title to show up. If you already knew how to add lettering to your image in another program you might want to click the other option.

    5. Save changes and view your new cool banner.

There - that should do it - unless I am a complete idiot and have no idea that a banner is different than a header (which could very easily be the case) because I noticed that you do have a picture on your header. Hmmmm - maybe I need a tutorial myself.

  4. Hi, Kari, someone made my header for me, but I had another one before that, that I made myself. I did a clipart picture the first time around. But, if you have a photo program, like Photoshop or some sort of graphics program, you can do a picture like Karolee suggested & then add captions or whatever. I uploaded mine just like a picture & drug it to the top of the layout page. Once you get it sized correctly (and that takes trial & error sometimes) you can just upload as a picture & there you have it. I know...lots of work getting a blog beautiful.

    Good luck!

  6. Ok, here is what I did ~ find someone giving a free banner away on their blog, sign up like a kazillion times, then Voila! Seriously now, I did truly win mine from a dear friend that was hosting a blog giveaway last week. Then, I got another computer savvy friend to edit & put it in for me. Sorry I don't know how to help you.

But personally, I like what you have at your page top ~ I'm one of those dangerous hot chicks these days myself!! I may borrow that sign, okay?!?

  9. Kari...
I am computer "slow"...if you get my drift...I don't know how I got my header or banner whatever the heck it is up on my site...I REALLY don't...I was fooling around w/some pictures and such and different settings for my blog...I was trying to put some flowers...kind of running along the side...but could never quite get it like I wanted...SO....me thinks...well, I have this picture I love of me and my girls...so I was going to try and put a little picture in the corner of that particular picture...when I went to check it...It was bigger than a bill-board in Times-Square...but I loved it b/c I love what it represents...so I just kept it...one day I may replace...but that will be hard...for two reasons...1)I love it and don't want to give it up yet...and 2)I REALLY don't know how to replace it b/c it happened by accident! Go figure...

Good Luck...maybe somebody out there knows just how to do it...AND explain it for gals like me...who are techo challenged!

  11. Well, your FIRST step is to move over to Wordpress...as soon as you do that I can help you with the header. (Hey what more could I do for a sista willing to put someone in a headlock for me?)

Seriously, blogger drove me nuts and now I LOVE wp!

  12. I am so glad YOU asked how to do the banner! Have you seen Jolene's new banner? It's WAY cool. Her blog is listed on Suzie Q's page. She scrapbooked a banner, photographed it, and then gave ALL the directions on how she put it in the banner spot in a very recent post! Jolene is so dang smart! And I want to steal her banner, because it has FALL STUFF ON IT!!! Cute little acorns! Leaves! Trees! You are gonna wanna steal it too!
Did you notice that I found my way back?
    heh heh!
But I still am not able to add you to my favorites. I notice that you know how to put polls on your blog and lists of people's blogs you can click on, so you are WAY ahead of me! Could you teach ME how to do that? That would be SO fun to have on my blog. You know you want to eradicate ignorance wherever it thrives!!! It's thriving at MY BLOG! I'm like a kindergardner! So proud that I HAVE a blog but it's so dang simple ... no cool stuff on it whatsoever. I know how to change the color of the FONT ... and the SIZE of the font ... THAT'S IT! whoop. hooray for my mad skills!
Cool chair. Can I come over and sit in it? If you lay it on the floor does it still work? Then you could lie down and get a massage at the same time, and not fall out when you fell asleep!
OK. I'm posting a spider story on my blog. You have inspired me.
    Come on over!

  14. I can't help you with this, but hey, can you help me with the link thing??? I still can't do a link.

I have learned a thing or two here myself!

  15. ok, go to edit blog, choose whatever sounds the closest to being a banner edit, pick a pretty picture and insert here. Or is it go to photo, then edit blog then add picture...I don't know, my son the Newpspaper Editor did mine and while I was watching, I wasn't paying attention. I drifted off somewhere between edit blog and insert foot. At least I think it was insert foot. Shall I have Wallace give you a jingle? You did notice his banner for the paper's Movie site, did you not? It's in my list for favorite blogs, if not... HIS creation...then look at what he gave me. He's cheated his dear old mum come to comparisons...Aunt Sandi

  16. Hi Kari,
I told you my computer guy(my son) did mine and he's in and out of our house and hard to pin down. He showed me how to do it and of course I tried on my own and messed it all up so I just kept what he did for my banner but I want to change it for the fall and then for the winter. So I'll learn with you.

  17. Kari,

Check out this blog by a couple of great gals over in my neck of the woods. From them I've learned to do links, banners, traffic meters, and all kinds of other cool stuff! Here's a link:
